IOP DBT Group
This program is designed to provide clinicians and clients with a practical, comprehensive framework for implementing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills. Developed by Dr. Cathy Moonshine, the program utilizes the D.B.T. in Life™ model, which focuses on balancing dialectics, mindful presence, and the consistent application of skills to build a “life worth living”. The program centers on four primary skill modules designed to enhance overall functioning and life satisfaction. The program is highly adaptable and suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those with significant mental health challenges and well-adjusted individuals seeking to optimize their functioning. It can be effectively implemented in various settings. To ensure high engagement and successful skill retention, the program is built around several key educational principles taught throughout the course. The program is highly adaptable and suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those with significant mental health challenges and well-adjusted individuals seeking to optimize their functioning. The program provides specific tools for tracking progress and analyzing behavior. A unique aspect of the program is its direct approach to obstacles. It asks clients to identify and explore the Pros and Cons of their “Therapy-Interfering Behaviors”—thoughts or actions that get in the way of the therapeutic process, such as skipping homework or resisting change. The program requires active engagement in both clinical and real-world settings. The therapist emphasizes that there is a difference between knowing a skill and using it. Participants are informed that they will learn new things over the coming weeks and months. Participants are encouraged to attend at a minimum 3-5 groups per week in conjunction with individual therapy. The handbook includes a comprehensive 6-page Recovery Plan to ensure participants maintain their progress after the initial learning phase. As a culminating part of the program, members develop a detailed recovery and optimal functioning plan. This plan serves as their “roadmap” for life after the formal group ends.
